He struggles with camp life. “I come from a very quiet place in PEI where people watch out for each other.” If he goes drinking with colleagues at the camp it’s a depressing pick-up atmosphere. He likes to read books but finds it hard to find privacy in his room. He hears the men in the adjacent rooms, and toilet, “I have to speak to my girlfriend under the covers … It’s no good up here people arrive after a breakup, or their relationships break down while they are here.”
He was off work because one of the diggers pierced an aquifer and was thinking that this was a good time to quit. On one of his recent cross-country flights the plane had an emergency landing and this contributed to his negative feelings of fly in fly out work. He has enjoyed meeting different ethnicities for the first time.
